Guest Blog: 2022 Indiana Psychiatric Society Events

As part of PRMS’ ongoing efforts to support the behavioral healthcare community and promote the organizations that work towards this mission, we are pleased to highlight our Partner, the Indiana Psychiatric Society, and its recent member events. We invited Dr. Aimee Patel, President of the Indiana Psychiatric Society and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine, to share more about her role and describe two events IPS hosted.

I am very pleased to serve as the current president of the Indiana Psychiatric Society (IPS) and to work with esteemed colleagues in expanding access to mental heath treatment.  As an Indiana native, I am particularly passionate about improving access to quality healthcare within our state.  I am also thrilled to have recently started in the role of Training Director for the Indiana University Psychiatry Residency Training Program in Indianapolis.  I am constantly impressed and inspired by the next generations of psychiatrists in training and how fortunate I am to be part of their journey as they launch into exciting new careers.

The IPS membership and I are similarly fortunate to have the long-time support of PRMS.  We deeply appreciate the collaboration and recognize the impact it has on our membership.  Sponsorship from PRMS allowed our society to host two recent in-person events that were well attended and quite enjoyed.  After the years of Zoom interactions, it was lovely to be back together sharing meals, memories, and knowledge!

The first event was a social evening hosted at Top Golf, a sports entertainment complex that mixes golf, technology, and good food.  A combination of residents, fellows, early career psychiatrists, and established psychiatrists attended the summer event.  Although my golf skills were not particularly strong, it was fun to mingle with colleagues and friends and to catch up after the long pandemic years.

In mid-September, IPS hosted the Regional Integrated Mental Health Conference (RIMHC) at West Baden Hotel in French Lick, Indiana.  The experience included a panel of accomplished speakers, and David Cash, JD, LLM, PRMS Associate Director of Risk Management, started the conference off with an enlightening presentation regarding malpractice claims and board complaints.  I also especially enjoyed sessions focused upon Neurostimulation and the Psychological Effects of Stalking.   The weekend was an ideal balance of professional education and recreational enjoyment, with down time filled with receptions, poolside relaxation, and dinner around a fire pit by the horse stables.
