 INTENDED AUDIENCE

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of psychiatrists and other behavioral healthcare clinicians in clinical practice.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Professional Risk Management Services, Inc. (PRMS, Inc.) has identified the issues of treating patients with suicidal behaviors, professional liability risks associated with prescribing medication, maintaining the confidentiality of information, proper termination of the psychiatrist-patient relationship, professional liability risks associated related to technology, and professional liability risks related to forensic activities to be an educational need based on a review of claims/event data, calls about these topics received on the Risk Management Consultation Service (RMCS) helpline, the results of a self-administered physician audit, a literature review, and consensus of risk management experts.

 OBJECTIVES

Utilize a suicide assessment tool

Document initial and on-going suicide assessment
Incorporate discussion of off-label use with patient in the informed consent process
Manage medication monitoring with a formal monitoring system
Eliminate improper disclosures of confidential information
Determine appropriate response to subpoenas
Apply the termination of treatment process appropriately
Determine the appropriateness of termination in a given treatment relationship
Recognize professional liability risks related to technology
Recognize professional liability risks related to forensic activities
